Sanctuary Women's Development Centers

The Sanctuary Women’s Development Center supports basic human rights by offering homeless and low-income women and children resources, providing support and advocacy to alleviate the effects of poverty within the community, and providing tools to overcome homelessness.

About Sanctuary Women’s Development Centers

In April 2009, Catholic Charities expanded its homeless services programs when it opened the Sanctuary Women's Development Center at Our Lady of Guadalupe mission church in southwest Oklahoma City. The name, Sanctuary, reflects both the program’s physical environment, as well as its philosophy.

The Sanctuary provides a safe, secure, empowering environment for at-risk women and their children to obtain social services and receive assistance in gaining independence.  The Sanctuary in Oklahoma City was so successful that the Board of Directors decided to replicate the program. In 2014, Catholic Charities opened a Sanctuary in Norman.

At both locations trained social workers provide case management services by assessing the personal strengths and needs of participants, including housing, income or employment, physical and mental health, and educational needs.

With this assessment, each participant receives help in creating a proactive plan of support to assist the family in overcoming homelessness and other obstacles that hinder personal growth. Life skills classes are conducted on-site twice a week to assist with job search, resume writing and daily living skills. Catholic Charities staff offer opportunities for other service providers to conduct on-site services such as legal services, health services, HIV testing, mental health awareness services, and DHS services. Staff collaborate with all area agencies to provide comprehensive services to meet the needs of each participant. In Oklahoma City, the nearby Baptist Mission graciously serves lunch to our participants and offers access to their clothing, as well as basic medical and dental services.

Although the Sanctuary program focuses on the needs of women who live in shelters, services are available to people who are at risk of becoming homeless.
